I was looking to buy a surface planer and had 2 options. I could either buy new lightweight planer or an older cast Iron one. I started to keep a look out for both keeping my eye on deals and second hand websites.
I eventually found a good option on a classifies ad, but it was a 4 hour drive away. After calling the guy I found out it came from a school in the UK initially and he had purchased 2 at the same time. It didnt look pretty but it had a brand new singlephase motor which i was happy with.
That weekend I took a gamble and drove the 4 hour drive to take a look. The risk paid off, it was a solid piece of kit and it really just needed some cosmetic work.
When I got it back to the home and eventually got it out of my boot I started by striping it down, dismantling everything, and began cleaning down everything with degreaser. Once that was done it was on to a wire wheel. After I was done I started to tape off the top surface and began painting.
Since the motor was in good condition I didn’t need to do much with regards the electrics, all I needed to do was ensure it was all clean, and that all connections were sound.
The covers on both sides didn’t look like they were the original panels, the back panel fitted fine but the front panel was not in good shape. I made a new panel for the front using MDF, I chartered the edge and painted it, once painted it looked like it was always there and I was very happy with the finish.
I purchased a new set of blades, fitted them and ensured they were aligned correctly. It was then onto the first test..
It works great and i’m very happy with the final finish, its not a machine I use every day, but having it there for when I need it, for such a small investment is great.
